Olay Professional Cleaning Brush Review

I hate to exfoliate. I hate the extra step. And, I hate the texture of the scrubs/peels etc. I just hate doing it. But my facial skin requires it or I get a build up. I have seen the Olay ProX Advanced Cleansing system on TV for a few weeks now and I have to admit I have been more than curious to try the professional cleaning brush.

I finally decided to shop around for it to see how much it was. After three stores that either did not stock it or were sold out of it, I found it at Shoppers Drug Mart. As luck would have it, seriously it was a lucky day, it was on sale for $24.99 (reg $32.99). I would never have bought it for the regular price. I also picked up refill brushes which were also on sale (two for $8.99).

What is in the Box

The Advanced Cleaning system includes:

  • a 2-speed facial cleansing brush
  • 2 AA batteries
  • And very small tube of exfoliating renewal cleanser

How it Works

Because the brush is water resistant (you can use it with wet hands and take it in the shower with you but cannot soak it water) it takes a little effort to remove the battery compartment but snaps back easily in place.

There are two buttons on the handle, an on/off and the speed. I prefer to use the slower speed on my sensitive skin. Basically, you wet your skin, apply the cleanser to your wet face, run the brush under water to moisten it then turn it on and hold it to your skin while constantly moving it around in a gentle motion. Whether your skin is sensitive or not you do not want to press too hard or leave it in one place to long or it will exfoliate too much in one area. A gentle hand is all that is required.

The brush is very soft and gentle and produces a light lather with the included cleanser. I really loved the mini massage feel the cleansing brush provides! It definitely cleanses better then massaging with my fingers and splash rinsing. I always find some make-up residue when I use the toner afterward but absolutely none when using the cleansing brush (followed by wiping off cleanser with facecloth). I have also used it with my usual milk cleanser with no problems. To clean it, I give the brush a quick rinse under running water and it is ready to use the next time. Olay recommends changing the brush every three months and it pulls off and snaps on easily enough.

Did It Work For Me

My skin tends to build up more dried skin on my outer cheeks and I noticed considerable improvement in the skin texture in just a few uses. I used the cleansing brush once a day at bed time a few days in a row and am currently using it every other night or more often if I wear cover-up.

I have used Buff Puff’s in the past, much to the chagrin of my esthetician, and I definitely find the Olay cleansing brush to be more gentle for every day use.
Overall, I really like using a cleansing brush at the sink (have not taken it into the shower to use) and can see this easily becoming a long term product of choice for cleansing and exfoliating.

On the down side, it did not come with a stand to hold it when not in use. As you can see I am currently using the plastic container it was packaged in. The other downside is it needs batteries to work. I am currently using the batteries that came in the package and will try using rechargeable batteries when they die but I have a feeling that the change over will be high.

You can get your Olay professional cleaning brush from your local drug store or online at Amazon (.com in US and .ca in Canada) for about $26.

Update: November 2024 — I still have this same brush and amazingly, still have the same batteries. I know! I don’t use the brush as much as I used to because I tend to wear less make-up these days and I’ve transitioned to using glycolic acid as my exfoliant of choice. This brush is still great for make-up removal though. Overall, I definitely feel I got my money’s worth. The brushes definitely last longer than recommended and if you are cleaning them properly that should extend the life of them as well.
